Over the past few months, I've been learning what it takes to design patterns. There was (is!) a steep learning curve for me with computer programs, but interestingly, making patterns also changed how I see things and how I sketch and paint.
In making patterns, I need the motifs or pieces of the design to be separate so I can control where they go. This is completely different from thinking in compositions. It's a little unnerving to see something in my head and then realize I need to break it into parts in order to rebuild it as a pattern.
Here are my very first patterns, registered with the copyright office.
